Types of Volunteers
- Visitor: Any individual, not employed by the school district, who occasionally assists within the classroom or school setting and is directly supervised by a certificated staff member (Examples: Guest Reader, Teacher Assistance, Dance Chaperones).
- Docents: Any individual, not employed by the school district, who regularly assists within the classroom or school setting and is directly supervised by a certificated staff member (Examples: SEL and Art Docents).
- Unsupervised Volunteer: Any individual, not employed by the school district, who supervises students without a certificated staff member present (Examples: Coaches and Field Trip Chaperones)

- Copy of Government Issued ID & Confidentiality Agreement (Click Here)
- Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test/Screening
- Completed by your Healthcare Provider
Requirements for all WUSD Unsupervised Volunteers

- Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test/Screening
- Completed by your Healthcare Provider
- Live Scan Fingerprinting Clearance & Background Check (Click Here)
- Completed Request for Live Scan Service From
- This form can be completed by any live scan facility.
- WUSD traditionally utilizes The Post Box at 820 Park Row in Salinas
- Fee to be covered by the volunteer.
- Completion of Mandated Reporter Training
- Option 1: Attend the in-person training on Wednesday, 8-26-26 in room 10 @ SBMS from 9am - 10:30am.
- Option 2: Complete the online training provided by the state of California & attach the completion certificate.

Q: Do I need to complete the live scan process in order to be a chaperone on a field trip?
A: If a volunteer will be supervising students without a certificated staff member present, they must complete all requirements listed in the ‘Unsupervised Volunteer’ section above including:
- Copy of Government Issued ID
- Completed District Application (Click Here) & Confidentiality Agreement (Click Here)
- Negative Tuberculosis (TB) Test/Screening
- Live Scan Fingerprinting Clearance & Background Check (Click Here)
- Completion of Mandated Reporter Training
Q: If I completed a mandated reporting training for another organization can I use that to meet these volunteer requirements?
A: Yes, as long as the training was completed on or after July 1, 2026. Please include a copy of your certificate with date of completion listed.
Q: If I completed a live scan for another organization can I use that to meet these volunteer requirements?
A: No. You must complete the live scan process with our school district’s form (Click Here).
Q: Do I need to complete the live scan process and mandated reporter training if I want to volunteer in my student’s classroom?
A: No. Any volunteer who occasionally assists within the classroom or school setting and is directly supervised by a certificated staff member does not need to complete a live scan or TB test/screening. Please coordinate with your student’s teacher and register with the school’s front office.
