Health Information for Flu and Coronavirus
Updated March 1, 2020
Cold and flu season is upon us. The California Department of Public Health reports that influenza (also known as the flu) activity levels have increased over the past several months, including here in Monterey County.
The 2019-2020 flu season has been complicated by recent reports of a novel coronavirus originating in Wuhan, China. This has been identified as Coronavirus (COVID-19). Although there have been reported cases of novel coronavirus globally, to date, there have been no reported coronavirus cases in Monterey County.
We are monitoring the situation and working with state and local health officials, who will provide updated information about the diagnosis and management of cases of novel coronavirus, as applicable. MCOE communicates regularly with school nurses and health professionals across the county and will continue to notify them of important updates regarding the flu and coronavirus. We are also in contact with the Monterey County Health Department (MCHD), the California Department of Education (CDE), the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) for updates and monitor notices from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
This has become a rapidly evolving situation and updates will be continuing as information is received. Many questions are being raised, so we are offering the following information and resources to keep the public informed.
Tips to Prevent The Flu
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent influenza is as follows:
- Get vaccinated every year
- Avoid close contact with sick people
- Frequent handwashing with soap
- Stay at home if you are experiencing flu-like symptoms
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth
- Individuals with chronic health issues and/or individuals experiencing severe symptoms should be evaluated by a medical professional.
